15 Fun Activities for Summer

Summertime is here! Warm weather, sunshine, and lush green trees signal a time when we want to be outdoors and engaged with the world around us. While our summer experience may look different in 2020 than in years past, there are still plenty of things we can do to engage our girls and ourselves in fun activities for the season. Here are 15 fun activities you can try this summer.

Physical Activities

Do you want to get up, get moving, and get the blood pumping? Here are some suggestions for you and your girls.

Dance Party

A dance party at home can happen indoors or out depending on the weather. All you need is your favorite music and room to dance. It’s perfect for all ages and doesn’t require any rules.

Swimming

If you have access to a pool, swimming is great physical exercise that can also keep you cool in the warm summer months. Learning to swim is a valuable life skill.

Yoga

If you want to slow things down a little, yoga can be done at all ages and skill levels. There are plenty of videos so you can do yoga at home, including those made just for kids.

Running

Jogging is a life sport that can be enjoyed at any age and alone or in a group. All you need are good running shoes and a safe route through your community.

Tennis

A sport that’s slightly more involved but can be learned and enjoyed at all ages is tennis. A ball, a racket, and access to a court can get you and your girls moving this summer.

Mental Activities

Exercising the brain is just as important as moving your body. Here are some mental activities to think about.

Puzzles

In the spring, as more people were staying at home due to shelter in place orders, puzzles launched in popularity. A fun puzzle can engage the minds of everyone in your family.

Memory Games

Memory is a perennial classic and you can make a version at home. Use it to challenge your ability to remember pictures, items, words, or anything else.

Word Searches

Word searches, and crossword puzzles for that matter, can exercise the brain as well. These fun word games are easy to find online and print out so you can have fun with them at home.

Mazes

Mazes can come in a lot of forms. You can follow a simple printed maze with a pencil or you can create a life-size version with boxes. The sky’s the limit.

Hide and Seek

This mental activity also has a physical component that is especially fun for younger children. Hide and seek challenges kids to create a strategy and put themselves in someone else’s shoes.

Craft Activities

If you teach your girls how to be creative, there is nothing they can’t do. Creative thinking goes hand in hand with innovation and problem-solving.

Coloring

One of the most accessible crafts is coloring. Break out the crayons and coloring books or encourage your kids to draw their own pictures.

Sidewalk Chalk

If you want to enjoy the sunny summer weather, take coloring outside and onto a bigger canvas. Sidewalk chalk is fun for all ages!

Sun Catchers

You’ll need a few more materials to make sun catchers, but they’re a lot of fun. Tissue paper, white glue, and construction paper can come together for fun window decorations.

Knitting or Crocheting

If you want to make this meditative activity easier for little fingers, try a knitting loom. As children get older and express an interest, knitting or crochet can grow with them into adulthood.

Painted Rocks

Painting rocks is trendy right now, but there’s a good reason for that. It’s easy to use acrylic paints for bright patterns and positive messages on rocks you find around your house. Then go for a walk and place them in the neighborhood where they can be spotted.

We’ve only just scratched the surface on potential summertime activities you can enjoy with your girls. We want to hear from you. What fun things are you planning to do this summer?
